I would suspect the mine shafts to be vertical....

Its an impressive project.

Its an impressive project.
A mine shaft IS vertical, a tunnel or drift is horizontal or nearly so, a stope is on an incline.

If a stope is on an incline, we here in Canada call it a ramp
