Lathe - Barber Shop Pole Pattern, Loose Carraige?

I think I would take a hard look at the spindle bearings, maybe just tighten them up a bit. When parting there was a lot more load on the machine, that might overcome some minor looseness.

What Jim said+ check for looseness in chuck or bad/loose belt. Also could be a harmonics artefact. Could try varying speed of motor. Makes a nice pattern if IF you could do it on command.

Lathe too clean?. As an aside, is that a mirror under your chuck and if so, what is it for?. I had a morror on my splashback, sorry, backsplash, but that was only to watch myself turn beautiful metal into landfill.

That T-nut would bear checking but I think the chuck locking bolt isn't tight or is not positioned correctly.
Also agree that lathe is much too clean. Skater some chips around there quick.
That pick of the distorted diameter is clear to see if you look at the light reflection.
A true surface would show a straight line of reflected light.

Looking at your pic, your lathe is bowed. It does look like the set true chuck isn't tighten properley. The camlck on the top isn't tightend. And the T nut does look to tall as darkzero said.
