As Daryl said, your lathe has to be level before you can do either test. And if you lathe is not new, any findings found from either test will indicate wear in the machine, not an alignment issue. There are exceptions to this rule, but it takes lots of experience and knowledge to fully understand alignment issues verses wear issues in a machine, or both!
For most of us, it don't hurt to "play" with these test, but don't create problems trying to realign things without fully understanding what your doing.
