I'm finding way too many opinions on oil for my LeBlond Dual Drive Lathe.

Does anyone know the CORRECT oils to use in the headstock, and also for the apron on this lathe?
Also, as oils have changed over the years, what are modern equivalents, as well as a good source for 1 to 5 gallon quantities in central VA?

Thanks in advance,
David

David,

You don't give the size or model number/name of your lathe but if you look in Downloads (requires being a Donor), you may find the operation instructions and maybe the parts manuals on it. But a quick look through several of the manuals gives generally either SAE 20 or SAE 30 or SSU (AKA SUS) 300 @100 F engine oil for all locations. One of the most specific gives SAE 20W-20 API Class SC. Most add that the oil should have oxidation inhibiting properties. SSU 300 is roughly equivalent in viscosity to SAE 20 and ISO 68. The military manuals mostly give SSU 300 @ 100F.

It's a LeBlond Dual Drive. Dual Drive is the model, and they were all 15" swing with the Dual Drive headstock design.
Thanks for the info on the oils.

OK. There is one manual on that model in Downloads. The oil for all locations is given as oxidation inhibited industrial oil equivalent to SAE 30 or SSU 500 @ 100°F. Or SAE 30 ND engine oil.
