I brought home a big Lehmann lathe today because It looked like it was too good to send to the scrap yard. That’s exactly what the previous owner was going to do with it. It appears to be pretty old, has a 10’ bed and 18” swing. The only numbers I found was 865 on the saddle and 9556 and B 13 on the transmission. I’d like to resurrect this monster. Is there any source on a manual for this lathe? Also, how old is it?
Thanks!

My serial number book starts at 1926 with #1149 so your machines is older than that.
The transmission may be a Drive-All. If you remove the paint from the front plate that mystery may be solved.
Your Lehmann has a lot of potential.

Transmission is not Drive All. Date has to be after 1898 (invention of quick change).

Lehmann is still in business. Their web site said foe over 90 years.

I had a Lehmann a bit newer than yours. It was a geared head machine but had split bronze spindle bearings. It was a decent machine.

Those gearboxes I have seen have ratios of 1, 2 3 4:1. Not exactly great. These transmissions were used a lot when converting lineshaft drive machines to individual electric power. Withe the motor and transmission mounted above the headstock it id extremely top heavy. Take care moving it.
