I thought I'd post about the skates I bought in case anyone else might be in the market for some.

Got them, off Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052PLTCG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There aren't steerable but the rolled pretty well with 6k of machining center on 3 of them. I could easily push the machine around in my shop. To steer them I just took the weight off the skates with the jacking screws and turned them. They rolled over the expansion joints in the concrete like they weren't even there.

Defininetly two thumbs up for them :eagerness:

Looks like a great deal, and it sounds like they performed well, too.

Any idea on where to get some at a reasonable price that would move a piece of equipment weighing 14k?

I thought about getting these. I figured I could put a piece of wood in the center of them and make them work. Each of them has a 3300lb capacity.

I could have rented a set of skates, but these weren't much more than renting. Yes the ones you rent are nicer, but I got by with these just fine.

For a little more money there are these. 4400lb capacity each.

"Reasonable" is such a subjective word! It would not be too difficult to fabricate and mount a swivel on those.

I bought 32 Chinese bearings from the Bay of EEEEE's. 2 per axle. 4 skates. A 2500lb. lathe will start rolling on it's own if parked on a very slightly tilted floor. Cost of bearings was in the neighbor hood of $64. Used 3 times so far so I am slightly ahead of the game.

I'd thought about putting a swivel on them, but time was short for me. The mill was blocking access to my 2 post lift and I needed to move it.

I'm not sure how the nylon rollers would hold up to being steered. It wasn't too much of a chore to move them, I just used the jack screws to lift it and turn them.

Now I'm just waiting for my 25hp motor to show up so I can build my phase converter and get the mill up and running.

Yeah, I've thought about just making some after seeing some prices. One set I saw was nearly $2000. I may still end up making my own. I've already talked to my friend that owns a parts store about appropriate bearings.
