Magnetic DRO Scale question (not for squeamish!)

Thanks, Jim for that post. Can I ask for a couple of different angles for your Z reader head for your lathe? It illustrated your point on the tape perfectly, but I curious on your mounting arrangement.

You have just convinced me to put a DRO on my big lathe

The back of my rear way is not a sliding surface, just clearance, but it is machined, a great place to put the tape. There is a gap between the carriage and the bed in that area as shown in the picture. The read head is mounted in a pocket I machined into the carriage. I could have made a bracket and mounted the read head differently, but I want to go for the ''invisible'' installation.

In one his last videos YouTuber Dale of "Build Something Cool" show how to cut glass scales.

In a recent Clough42 video, he was mounting DRO that worked entirely by a implied "magnetic" scale principle.
The brand name on the 0.004" stainless strip was "ELECTRA MAGNETIC SCALE".
Google's algorithm relentlessly substitutes "electro" for "electra", so my purpose is thwarted.

Hello Graham,

I tried a couple searches and it recommended the slightly different spelling "ELEKTRA MAGNETIC SCALE".

Here's my search results:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q="ELEKTRA+MAGNETIC+SCALE"&t=ha&va=j&ia=web

....and the PDF from DRO Pros at the first hit:
https://www.dropros.com/documents/JointedSpecs2.pdf

That document does NOT have any of the working theory of the parts, but does have some install guidance.

Brian

I have cut down both glass and magnetic scales magnetic is easier! And less nerve wracking
