Are there any discount or direct import sources for magnetic scales? There are numerous sources on AliExpress for DROs with glass scales but I havent found magnetic scales.

Just go to eBay and type in DRO magnetic. There are pages of them.

Here's a couple different sources:

If you want to save a bit more $$$, find some cheap scales and use the Touch DRO App: http://www.yuriystoys.com/
As far as I know, it still only works with Android devices, but you can buy a cheap tablet for $50 or less.
What I like about it is memory is only limited by your device. Add a bigger memory card, more memory space.
Two more reasons is the ability to back up projects data from your device to another or your computer/back-up hard drive. The other is the continued innovations and additions.
Here's the link to the page with info on the latest update: http://www.yuriystoys.com/2017/07/touchdro-new-version-highlights.html
In addition, there's an army of users out there testing and improving the coding all the time. It's also all open source and free. Want a Tach feature for your machine(s) ??? You can do a DIY add for less than $20.

I assume you are looking for magnetic scales that offer similar resolution to glass scales, and can be used as an alternative to glass scales using a RS422 interface. So you would be looking a 5 and 1 micron scales. I have not seen any inexpensive suppliers, but you could contact Ditron who are an alternative to Elctronica. There are other suppliers, but they may be manufacturer specific (proprietary) and use a different interface. I did have a recent discussion with DRO Pros as to the substitution of magnetic scales for glass scales for different DRO displays, they indicated there can be issues with different pin out connections and also the power supplied to the scale (current) as such it is not a defecto that they can be interchanged and work 100% of the time. Yuri's toys talks a bit about the matching the RS422 connections to the the scale pin out, his newer developments look very attractive and can interface with different scales.
