Making a low profile crown gear (contrite wheel)

An interesting manufacturing process. One note; the tooth profile of the crown gear should be that of a rack tooth; straight walled flanks at either 14-1/2º or 20º.
 
I remember those slot car gears very well even though it was a lifetime ago. Funny, nothing else uses that kind of gear anymore? Not even RC cars?
