Manley mechanical press

Thanks. I kinda let my enthusiasm get the most of me as I figured it was such a simple machine, what could be wrong? What me worry? Old Iron is a gamble and I’ve got so much time into it now I can’t really quit now. Luckily it’s mostly time as I think I’ve got around $70 in materials and parts including the needle scaler.

Were you interested in it as a collector or like me hoping for an inexpensive tool?
Both. I like old tools that i can use. Ive had plans to build a hydrulic press but cnt seem to source a reasonble priced large cylinder.

How many ton press were you thinking about?

Ahh, yeah, you’re talking a serious press. 20tn and below there are many inexpensive options.

I have neither the space nor the need for something that big. Yeah, famous last words :) So far my arbor press/speed press has proven to be the most handy. i often wish the Manley was one of those combo presses with the built in speed press. More options less room.

A lot of work there, but you will have something unique when your done. Very nice job. Mike

Thanks Mike. That uniqueness is what pulled me in. Also it was in that range where that once in a blue moon need would be covered. I didn’t know until later it was supposedly a 22tn press.

A little update. Started in on the new picklefork/guts retainer.

I took 1/2” 1018 plate and cut it square. Put it in the shaper until it was flat on both sides. Then the lathe and bored it to fit the big groove the retainer goes into. Then went to the mill and put it on the rotary table. Several years ago my brother made an adapter for me. Its 3MT threaded to put my 4” 3jw chuck on and mounted retainer to that. Cut the OD leaving two ears for the adjusting bolts. Then over to the bandsaw and cut it half. The plan is to slot the mating surfaces and put plate in one side that will mate into the opposite retainer half. I thought about bolting them but just decided a good snug fit of the mating plates should be good. Guess I’ll find out.

Well it’s back together. I was going to paint it but it always seems I have to mess up the paint because I’ve forgotten something. So I’ll not tempt fate.
