Measuring Thread with a single wire.

I was told by my machinist son in law to use a small rubber band on the bottom 2 wires.

I haven't tried it yet.
 
The cheep wire set i have came with some handy rubber / plastic things to hold two of them on the end of the micrometer , it works quite well.

Yeah was going to 3d print some of these at some point.
 
I worked out a procedure to measure thread pitch diameter with a single wire. I basically involves measuring the O..D of the thread and measuring the diameter plus a wire.

Twice the diameter over a single thread wire minus the measured major diameter should give you the same reading as a 3 wire measurement.

That said, if it was really that simple to get a reliable measurement, I would have expected the method to be published widely five decades ago. The only potential issues I can think of are burrs on the threads and non-concentricity of the threads with the major diameter.
