MESSERSCHMITT TG-500

Yours looks like it will be around a long time. Very cool.

THESE CARS WERE IN PRODUCTION FROM 1958-61 .
THEY MADE ABOUT 320 OF THEM SO THEY WERE NEVER COMMON CARS .
TODAY AN ORIGINAL TG-500 PULLED OUT OF A BARN NEEDING EVERYTHING IS WORTH OVER 100 GRAND .

I DECIDED TO MAKE MY OWN USING A CHASSIS FROM THE MORE COMMON 3 WHEEL KR-200 .
MY CAR IS TITLED AS A 1959 MESSERSCHMITT & WILL BE COMPLETELY STREET LEGAL .

WE PUT THE MOTOR BACK IN IT TODAY . THE HONDA 600 COUPE DRIVETRAIN
LOOKS PRETTY BIG IN THE LITTLE CAR .

THE ORIGINAL CARS WERE 500cc TWO STROKE WITH A REAR ENGINE .
JUST 20 HORSES BUT BAGS OF TORQUE . HERE IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE .

MY 4 STROKE MOTOR IS HEAVIER BUT THE EXTRA WEIGHT IS IN FRONT OF THE REAR AXLE
SO I WILL HAVE BETTER WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION . AND WITH 36 HORSES , IT'LL BE QUICK .

You and your wife should be very proud, it's a beautiful job and looks like it would be fun. I'd have to wear it like a roller skate , but I think they're cool little cars. Nice job on all the machining that I can see thumbs up . Good luck waiting for more pictures . God bless
 
MORE PICTURES ?

HONDA DESIGNED THIS MOTOR TO GO IN THE FRONT OF A LITTLE CAR .
MAKES SENSE TO PUT THE AIR COOLED ENGINE UP FRONT WHERE ALL THE AIR IS .

HOWEVER , MY MOTOR WITH A CAR IN FRONT OF IT IS LIKELY TO HAVE COOLING ISSUES .
I HAVE TACKLED THE HEAT MONSTER ON SEVERAL FRONTS .

THESE MOTORS HAVE AN ODD SETUP THAT SUCKS AIR THROUGH THE MOTOR INSTEAD OF BLOWING IT .
THE FAN LOOKS JUST LIKE AN 8" BOAT PROPELLER . IT IS BELT DRIVEN BY A MULTI PLANE
ARRANGEMENT SIMILAR TO THE CORVAIR . IT BLOWS STRAIGHT OUT THE BACK .

THIS WAS NOT WELL SUITED FOR MY CAR SO I COMPLETELY REDESIGNED THE AIR SYSTEM .
THE ONLY PART I SAVED IS THE DRIVE PULLEY ON THE CRANK .

MY SETUP USES TWO FANS MOUNTED ON A COMMON SHAFT . THEY ARE MOUNTED ON EACH
END OF A METAL BOX AND HAVE A LEFT & RIGHT HELIX SO THEY BOTH BLOW OUT .

THE ORIGINAL SYSTEM HAD A LOT OF LEAKS . MY SIDE SHROUDS ( NOT PICTURED ) FIT SNUGLY AGAINST THE AIR BOX
THE TWO 6.5" FANS WILL MOVE ABOUT 25% MORE AIR BUT MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT THEY SEND
IT OUT THROUGH THE REAR WHEEL WELLS . THE BIG DENT IN THE AIR BOX IS TO CLEAR THE CARB FLOAT BOWL .

I HAVE A SERIAL TAG FROM AN ORIGINAL TG-500 MOTOR MOUNTED ON MY AIR BOX .
I AM THINKING ABOUT MILLING THE "HONDA" OFF OF THE VALVE COVER & POLISHING IT .

WE HAVE FUNCTIONAL PEDALS ON THE CAR NOW .
THIS IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINALS .

THE PARKING BRAKE WAS ON THE FRONT WHEELS BUT WITH THE BIG DISC BRAKES UP FRONT ,
I HAD TO PUT THE P.BRAKE AT THE REAR WHERE THE DRUMS ARE .
THE CABLE GOES THROUGH THE TUBE INTENDED FOR THE ACCELERATOR .

THE CLUTCH PEDAL HAS A STRAIGHT PULL ON THE CABLE .

THE ACCELERATOR CABLE IS ROUTED UP THE RIGHT SIDE CHASSIS TUBE .
NORMALLY THIS IS NOT USED BUT IT IS A WONDERFUL STRAIGHT ROUTE THAT COMES OUT NEAR THE CARB .

I DECIDED TO MILL THE "HONDA" LOGO OFF THE VALVE COVER JUST TO KEEP THEM GUESSING .
I GAINED 1/16" OF HOOD CLEARANCE IN THE PROCESS !

THE MASTER IS SOURCED FROM A MG MIDGET & IS A DUAL CIRCUIT TYPE .
I MADE AN ALUMINUM WEDGE TO GET THE RESERVOIR LEVEL .

IT EVEN HAS A DEAD PEDAL THAT SERVES AS A FOOTREST .
THE ASSEMBLY WAS HAND FABRICATED .
THE BRAKE & CLUTCH PEDALS WERE SOURCED FROM A 1950's HEINKEL MICROCAR .

WE WILL BE RUNNING THE HARD LINES SOON & BLEEDING THE SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST TIME .
 
MAKING SOME GOOD PROGRESS ON THE TG .
I NOW HAVE A ROLLING CHASSIS THAT IS NEARLY READY TO DRIVE .

THE STAINLESS GAS TANK WAS MADE FROM AN OLD SIGN .
AFCO SHOCKS & SPRINGS HOLD UP THE REAR . STAINLESS HEAT SHILEDS PROTECT THE TIRES .

Just found this thread.
Excellent and AMBITIOUS project.
Beautiful work all around. I mean the planning and design as well as the execution.

I have one concern and two additional questions.

My concern is regarding the engine air cooling setup. Please show pics of the side shrouds installed.
Are you going to instrument the engine temperature at all?
I'm just thinking that I'd rather read "getting too hot" on a gauge than to find out any other way.
Having the front of those cylinders so close to that panel looks scary to me.
Maybe just my ignorance. I hope so.

What bushings did you choose for the rear suspension links?

I'm intrigued by the idea of having it " TITLED AS A 1959 MESSERSCHMITT".
The criteria is "what it sort'a looks like? Or, what the requester wants'ta call it. Or you work for the NC DMV? Or ????
