Just acquired a "Sears and Roebuck" model 101.29881. Looking to replace the tailstock assembly. Suggestions on where to find one?
 
Ebay is the best bet, set up a search to notify you- something like "Atlas/Craftsman 12" lathe tailstock"
 
What's wrong with the one that you have?
 
Binding up, won’t pull all the way back, leaving about 2” out and not kicking out the chuck or other implements. Internal gear issues I suspect.
 
There are no gears in the tailstock. The most likely possibility is that someone ran the ram out past the 2-1/2" point and the upper ram lock has fallen down onto the top of the lower one and is blocking the ram from sliding back through the lock.

Assuming that the above is the culprit, to fix, run the ram out until it is free of the ram drive screw and pull the ram on out of the tailstock. With the ram lock handle, pull the lock assembly out of the tailstock. Slide the ram back in and re-engage the drive screw and retract the ram far enough to eject the chuck arbor. Again crank the ram out and pull it from the tailstock. Thoroughly clean out the hole where the lock goes. Clean and wire-brush the lock cylinders.

You will need some SAE 20 oil, some 1/2" to 3/4" masking tape and a 3/16" to 7/32" diameter permanent magnet taped to a like diameter steel rod that together are about 2" long to reinstall the lock and ram. Wrap some tape around the joint between the magnet and rod.

Re-install the lower lock cylinder on the lock bolt and wrap the masking tape around the top 1/4" of the exposed bolt threads. Smear some SAE20 oil (NOT grease) on the lower cylinder, align the beveled flat with the bore that the ram slides in, and lower the cylinder and bolt into the hole in the tailstock until stopped by the tape. Smear oil on the the ram, insert it in the hole until you can engage the screw, and retract it to zero.

Smear oil on the upper cylinder, hold the bolt against dropping into the hole by first pulling it up as far as it will go and then holding a putty knife against it, remove the masking tape, and drop the upper lock cylinder onto the bolt until it rests on the putty knife blade. Drop the magnet into the hole in the top of the upper cylinder. Hold the magnet, withdraw and set aside the putty knife, and let the upper lock cylinder slide down into the hole until it is stopped by the ram. Again, hold the putty knife against the side of the bolt, and remove the magnet. Reinstall the ram lock handle 3 or 4 threads and withdraw the putty knife. Tighten the lock and loosen about 1/2 of a turn.

Of course, if being blocked by the upper lock cylinder wasn't the problem, Weather Radar also shows an approaching...
