Must be a record, wanted to see a house, made tour request at 11:30am, house gone before noon...

U-Haul has book boxes for $1.45 and will take back unused ones. I'd rather have uniformly shaped boxes, all things being equal. I do have some random boxes in the attic, but they'd only be for lighter stuff. If I buy 50 boxes it's $72.50, which is ok, especially compared to what the cost of the move will be. As they say, chump change. Makes me squeak, (cheapo) but have to keep it all in perspective. Found some at Staples, they are $1.40 each, but no returns that I know of. They sell them in packs of 25. U-Haul lets me buy how ever I want.

Bought a stack of boxes today at U-Haul. They also seem to offer something like PODS to move stuff, basically it's a big crate which you fill up and it gets picked up by them and trucked to your location. You empty it and they come pick it up. Didn't get pricing but it seemed interesting.

Past days have been basically sorting through old stuff and chucking 95% of it. Seems I had a penchant for buying technology that was destined for the landfill. Tape drives, zip drives, pick an obsolete technology and I bought it. Dang, a lot of $$$ down the drain. Found old motherboards, and stuff from eons ago. Been making two dump runs a day. Been doing a lot of shredding too. Anything with our names on it gets shredded. Basically make 3 piles, keep, toss as is, and shred. The keep will get packed.

The attic light, an old fluorescent fixture, quit. So I had to hang a spare LED fixture, which I managed to do in 20 minutes. Definitely improving up there, so it is encouraging. Once the weed out is complete, I'll clean the room a bit, then pack the keep stuff and categorize it.

I'll have to make a spreadsheet to keep track of stuff. Like what is in each box, and where I want it to end up in the new house.
a. Mover takes most of these items
b. I move a few of these items, hopefully very few.

We used the U-Boxes from U-haul for our Elk Rapids move, couldn't get a POD delivered up there. They are quite a bit smaller than the POD but also cost less. They have trailers for them too if you want to save the delivery fee. They're also really cheap for monthly rent, we had one that we kept around when doing our ADU build just to store materials in.

Good luck with the cleanout.

About 8 more runs to the dump. Worker at the scale house recognizes me now, I keep finding batteries to recycle. Last visit she said to me with a smile, "we can't keep on meeting like this". Unbelievable all the old, dead NiCad, NiMH and Li-On cells I keep finding. Old fluorescent fixtures and junk like that.

Beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel up in the attic. Found stuff dating back to high school, and earlier. My goodness, why I kept that I don't know. Still have a file cabinet to attack, but I hope that won't be too bad.

Also found a couple of newspapers from the moon landing, and from Nixon's resignation. Uncovered an abandoned flintlock pistol kit I was working on, circa 1973. Have a stock, barrel, various pieces, the lock, a pile of flints and a powder horn. Wasn't patient enough to finish it! And a whale tooth, probably bought that on Nantucket Island in the late 60's, when there were no restrictions. Had intended to carve it.

Have to keep on plugging, hoping the attic is the bulk of the worst of it.

Did find out something irritating: The previous owners installed a mailbox with a lock. I did a radon test and put it in my mailbox. Unfortunately the mail carrier can't open the box! So I have to send some keys down to my daughter, so she can open the box, and retrieve the test and mail it. When I get down there, I'm going to remove that mailbox and put in a normal one. First it's ugly. Second, a locking mailbox just doesn't make sense for my use case.

The fun continues. More clean out and packing. Becoming a bit less discerning about things, because we're getting to the short strokes. This morning I turned in my oxygen, acetylene and argon gas cylinders. You know, they've gotten heavier over the ages. They were in a crazy place in the garage and I had to move a lot of heavy items just to get to them and have enough room to lift them out of their alcoves. But hooray that's done! A drop in the bucket, but something positive. I really didn't like transporting them inside my RAV4, but it wasn't too far, less than 2 miles and I took it easy. Yes, the safety caps were on. The HP cylinders were bottoms towards the rear, and the acetylene was pointed bottom towards the front. Don't ask me why I did it that way, it made sense at that moment of time.

I need to get rid of waste oil, and this is proving to be a pain in the neck. I have these little containers, like sealed cans of 2 stroke oil, lots of quarts and some larger sizes. The city no longer takes or recycles oil. So I have to go to a place like AutoZone and hope their tank isn't full, and deal with all the myriads of little containers. It's a time sink and I'm running out of time.

This Saturday is a haz waste day, which only occurs once a month. Been collecting stuff for that. I found some white (titanium dioxide) oil based primer, which I will use up at the house, with a little required painting. At the current cost of paint, I will use it, rather than toss it. House paint has gone way up. They don't take liquid latex paint at all. But I learned the trick to stir in kitty litter. They will take that in the normal trash stream.

Well, got to buy more boxes. The book boxes are not quite big enough for some of my things. They are great for most books though. It seems that the in store price is higher, so it makes sense to buy them online and pick them up. That's my next task. For packing fill I have a roll of butcher paper that I need to set up an easy way to use it. It's 3' wide, so not so easy to use. I realize I can use towels and clothing for some padding, but for the more shop like stuff I'll use the paper. Might as well use it.

My free Ring subscription ended. Now I get alerts whenever the wind blows, even at minimum sensitivity. Not really useful like this. Guess one needs to spend money to avoid nuisance alarms. Think I'll dump it when I get there. Had to turn off the community feature, as I was getting weird messages, like hey, there's a weird guy in the hallway of my apartment. If I lived in that building maybe I'd care, but that kind of message from someone 6 miles away is mostly something I don't need to know about.

Not where I live any more. No oil. Like I said, I have all these little containers I have to empty. Need to use a can opener on them, like on old fashioned pop cans. Ugh. Not hard, just time consuming.

I haven't seen cans in a long, long time. I don't even have an oil spout for a can anymore. Have any empty gallon cans that you can move them to for disposal. Walmart?

What about Freecycle to get rid of them. You must have a local group near you.
