What do you think of the new furnishings?

We got these in about 5 weeks ago and it's taken that long to actually get them set up and running. Yesterday I actually started running production on one machine.

It's been a major struggle getting only one running. We had Fadals and hundreds of part programs and they bought some conversion software to convert the Fadal programs over to a Okuma compatible one. Well the software sucks. I was trying to set up a part with 6 tools and our programmer and I worked all day on the program and gave up for the day. The drill cycles won't work, cutter comp is in radius and the Fadal programs are in diameter. It's been very frustrating. But we will get it eventually. That's if the owner stops coming down 10 times a day asking when they will be running.

The machines have a lot of interesting features. They have probes and tool setters, and my favorite a chip conveyor. I've been shoveling chips out of Fadals for 25 years now. So this is a nice change, But if I miss the shoveling I can always come home and shovel chips out of my Fadal. I picked up a 30 inch machine with a 4th on it when they moved the Okumas in.

One of the features on the Okumas is probing for size. You can set up the probe in the program and have it measure the part and if it's out of a specified tolerance it can adjust cutter comp and remachine the part and measure again. We haven't got there yet, we are still crawling trying to learn how to run them.

One of the machines is a 5 axis. We haven't done any 5 axis work yet, the guy training us wants us to get used to the machines and he will be back in two weeks for advanced training. They bought this super high dollar work holding set up for the 5 axis. In my opinion it's just too tall. Cuts down on the size of the part we can run. They are getting a 4th axis for another one of them but it's not in yet.

The tool setter is something I'd never seen before. It can do length and diameter. For tools larger than 1/2" it actually spins the tool in reverse to touch the length off and then come down on the side it the probe on two sides. It's way more accurate than measuring the tool by hand., But the whole process is slow, I can touch off tools way faster with the old machine using a shim. Another problem with it is that it's just too tall. Have to be really careful when using the second vise.

Here is a youtube vid of it in action.

I guess I'm supposed to wear a helmet when operating this machine.
