I've been using my Micromark 7x16 bench lathe as a wood lathe. I picked up the wood-turning kit, and it proved to be rather limited. Instead of clamping the toolrest bracket to the toolpost, I drilled it and bolted it to T-nuts on the compound (a T-slot compound from LMS). Made a new toolrest from 13: of angle iron with a square block, milled and bored at an angle (20 deg I think) for the shaft, welded to it. Looks awful but works good.
Also replaced the junk spur center with, I dunno what it's called, a cylinder with an inverted cone bored into it and 4 V-grooves 90 degrees apart cut into the cone. The V-grooves trap the corners of square stock, serving as a dog id there is tailstock pressure.
I don't care if the sawdust trashes the 7x16. The lathe has never worked well on metal (my poor technique? probably) so at least I get some use out of it this way. Great way to make tool handles.
