I've been machining for years even worked in a small shop as a machinist.
My question is- I have this old South-bend lathe a 1923 11" swing 5' bed lathe.
For the life of me I can't figure out what the head stock taper is.
I've tried several Morse tapers in it and nothing fits.

Any insight? Thanks LaMar

You might have a look here, it talks about what some call a "proprietary South Bend taper" that is kind of but not really a MT5. This the page from the lathes.co.uk site, a worthwhile place to spend some time if you have not checked it out already. As for the taper, Tony does mention a source but I have idea if it's still valid or not.

Here's the link, the part about the spindle taper is roughly mid-page. Good luck.

i have heard that they are Morse Taper 4-1/2
that equates to:
large end 1.5"
small end 1.266"
length of taper 4.5"
.6240 is the taper per foot

See if some of the info here helps:

Good luck,
Ted

Give us some approximate dimensions. The document that TT posted only covers the "modern" line of SB lathes (1940 - ). It probably is one of the notorious SB "proprietary" tapers, like the later 10L, which has a "large" MT3 taper (same taper per foot, but larger diameters).
