Need to shrink steel shaft

.004 is a bridge too far. I pushed the envelope with heat and cold (but still less than .004) many years ago and got the thing together. Fifteen minutes later I was on the other rside of my shop and heard a PING. You guessed it, the part cracked and I had to start all over again.
 
Maybe a skimming pass on the lathe? Or chuck it up and use Fine Sandpaper? On one or both side of your fitting.

Twer it me I'd send the gear back to wherever it came from and request they send the correct one.................Bob
