So we got a new bridge here at the beginning of the summer, and this weekend was the first opening of the pedestrian walkway so I went down with my sister to check it out. Thought you might like some of the engineering details.
The new bridge replaces an old iron bascule-type and has a really cool open-air feeling. It still needs to raise and lower for marine traffic, but this one runs on these massive roller trucks underneath the one end. There's a catwalk from the main pedestrian walkway and it allows you to be right on top of the workings. It's so cool -- like you're a piece of thread passing through the eye of a giant needle!
The north end is what's left of our working harbour, not much heavy industry anymore.
Looking south across the pedestrian walkway towards the inner harbour. A few marine engineering outfits are left but that's about it. The rest is tourism and luxury living. From the walkway it's like you're hanging in space, and there's no traffic noise.
It was a popular place for the locals today by the looks of it. Not every day you get to try out a new bridge! Thanks for looking!
