Hey everyone, somebody local has for sale a Nova 1240 metal lathe. I have searched this site and Practical Machinist and cant seem to find any information. Does anyone else have any information on if this machine is made by someone else or what kind of quality we are looking at?

Hmmmm. Finnish. Sounds promising.

Dollars to donuts it's imported from Asia. If this is a used lathe, be careful because this may have been imported into the USA but, is not converted over to USA operation. The motor and all the markings could be set for 50 Hz operation and of-course, would be 220V. The leadscrew might be metric so you'd have to cut SAE threads the same way an SAE lathe has to cut metric threads.

Gotcha. Thanks. This is the kind of thing I was wondering about.

Hi gasmith,
if you do in fact have a 50Hz unit, you'll need to replace the transformer.
you can run a 60hz transformer on 50hz, but you don't want to run a 50Hz transformer on 60Hz.
the transformer will run very hot and may fail very quickly
good luck!
