O-ring groove tool: Make or buy?

Just throwing this out there. If you have a part with dimensions requiring accuracy (customer part) for the groove, Thinbit by kaiser makes inserts with the proper geometry for both static and dynamic o-ring seals. Run about $15 for the insert I believe.

If it is a hobby job, grind it at home and call it good enough.

Been a while, but how much are there shanks to go with inserts?

My 1/2” Right hand tool for the groove n turn line was about $100.

Most expensive lathe tool I bought but the quality is outstanding. Also the wide variety of inserts let’s one tool cover all kinds of turning, grooving, threading, etc.

They also offer boring bar and face grooving style holders.

EDIT: My toolholder is a LGS12R.

Here is an example catalog page for inserts to cut static o-ring seals. Notice the appropriate angles to the tool as well as the corner radaii.
