‘The’ Guide for wood machinist tool chests, pre-1960, was updated this month and now includes separate pages of pictures and info for all of these manufacturers – Gerstner, Pilliod, Union, Wedell & Boers, Hammacher Schlemmer, National Cabinet, Lufkin, C.E. Jennings, Mid-West Mfg., Baker-Case, Schartow Iron Prod’s. (SIPCO), National Tool & Chest (Star), George Scherr and L.S. Starrett. https://sites.google.com/site/theguideforwoodmachinistchests/
Enjoy and have a good one……Ted

American Tool Chest Co., Wauwatosa, WI (a suburb of Milwaukee), has been added to Pg 40 of ‘The’ Guide. It was formed in 1920 by John H Ehlert and burnt down in 1921. This also answers questions about Ehlert Hardware and Ehlertbilt machinist tool cases.
Also, I have rearranged the manufacturer’s listings on Pg 01 to a chronological order, earliest start-up at the top down to the latest at the bottom. Why? Just something I’ve been wanting to do for more order and it’s been a boring winter. Have a good one………Ted https://sites.google.com/site/theguideforwoodmachinistchests/

Well, guess what. Another revision on July 5th for ‘The’ Guide for wood machinist tool chests. https://sites.google.com/site/theguideforwoodmachinistchests/ We just keep pounding away and it’s getting better and more accurate with each revision.

Rev. July 5, 2018 - Revised Pg 11 to show 1914 full face front panel chests. Also, changed Pg 06 to ‘Explaining Non-Standard Production’.

We average about 450 hits a month of which about 300 are actual users spending over 20 minutes each, on the average. Check it out, it’s a challenge………Ted

Very cool. Also really useful for anyone contemplating building one.

Here’s another Gerstner machinist Market Test Chest.

I recently acquired a Gerstner all OAK #O41 that I had never seen before. It has the rectangular lid lock and the diamond finger pull on the relieved face panel. Its Hardware Period Date would be 1921 – 1925.

The 1st all oak Gerstner ‘chest’ was their Style #O41, O41A, O41B and O41C released in their 1927 brochure. It is shown with a clasp lid lock and must have had the rounded panel finger pull like the leatherette ones. No oak chests are shown in their 1926 Hardware Poster that I own.

However, Chandler & Farquhar Co., Boston, Mass., Machinist Tools and Supplies, published their copyrighted 1924 Catalog B, which I own. It states in the Gerstner Style #41 write-up - ‘Also made in quartered oak finish, not covered, at the same price. When ordering this, designate O41, O41A, O41B or O41C.’ The pic, or cut, shows the rectangular lid lock.

This #O41 is another example of a Gerstner ‘Market Test Chest’. Perhaps it was originally purchased through Chandler & Farquhar. Its actual Period Date would be 1924 – 1925.

Terry Rushbrook did the refinishing work for me, leaving its character and patina. He did put in new Gerstner felt.

Check out my website if you wish. Have a good one……Ted

I've got two 'unknowns' boxed up downstairs, had them for the past couple of decades, desperately want to restore them sometime.

I was given this box 25 years ago . Its marked DD 63 inside the bottom right of the floor and measures 11x17x8. Looks like oak. The site is for earlier boxes if the 63 refers to the year. I love all wood tool boxes and use this one by my lathe every day.chest1.JPGchest2.JPGmodel.JPG
Any idea who made it?
