It is difficult to get in the TS straight or flat. Once that MT grips just a little it is hard to move.

A small level will help align the offset tool before tapping the MT taper tight. Same idea but different tool in photo below:

Once the MT taper is set it will not move. There is very little torque involved.

would need to check the level of the machine first or set it to the machines levelness
 
No need to check the level of the lathe. To fine tune just put a DTI on the cross slide and sweep across the top of the taper attachment.
