so i noticed that the speeds listed for the PM1340GT are 90-1600 RPM 50 - 2200 optional

can some one explain how that is achieved?

is it a different pulley? 2 speed motor??

man if i only had the extra dough. them are nice lathes

There are six speed/gear changes in the headstock. From the motor to the headstock there is a two position pulley to give you a high range and a low range. Then there are six speeds in each of those two ranges.

The optional 50-2200 is achieved through a 3 phase version with a VFD which can be "tweaked" up and down slightly to give the full range. Also the 3 phase motor will take some of the 60 hertz "pulsing" out that is fairly common on a single phase lathe at low RPM.

The other sweet thing about this lathe is the Norton style gearbox for threading.

Mike.
