Reed-Prentice

A lot of them were navy issue. Low spindle speeds but a very tough old lathe. I missed out on one a few years ago for $800. First guy there bought it. If you don't need high speed for small parts this is a good machine.

I will make smallish parts and chamber rifles with it but I will use HSS so the speed shouldn't be a big issue. The biggest problem is the sheer size of the headstock for threading/cambering operations.

You should jump on this if the price os right. I had a guy with a rollback wrecker lined to pick that one up if the other guy backed out. I was sure hoping ro get it but some things aren't meant to be. I bought a old conehead sb 16 then came up with a 15" sebastian about the same size as the reed prentice. The reed is a much more rigid machine though.good luck hope you get what you want.

That does look like a good solid machine. Rigidity is good. All the best.

It's a done deal on my end provided the seller doesn't back out between now and Saturday when I go and get the thing. I really hope he doesn't change his mind because now I'm excited about getting it. Already started a thread on the garage journal asking for pointer on how to insulate my garage and wire the 220 to it.

The color is a little ridiculous but in the grand scheme of things that doesn't mater a whole lot.

What is the smallest motor I get away with on this machine? I'm not gonna be taking huge cuts or anything? I suspect it has a 5HP or larger motor and I don't want to A. buy a VFD that larger and B. pay the power bill. Can I get away with a 3HP or even 2?

Got it home. 320 mile round trip. Used a 97 Suburban with a 454 and a car trailer to get it. Paid a tow truck driver 60 bucks to load it and a different driver 60 bucks to unload it. Cost me 131 bucks in gas so all told I spent 250 bucks moving it and 1000 on the Machine. The Tow driver who unloaded it said it was about all his truck could do to lift it. Here are some more pics. Now to get a manual for the thing get it apart and get it cleaned
