I bought a used Taig lathe. The rack and pinion are usable but not in the best of shape so I decided to replace them. The clip on the back of the pinion along with the eccentric bushing are easy enough to remove. But, I cannot figure out how to get the pinion shaft off the hand wheel assembly. Is it press fit? I have tapped lightly with a piece of wood but wanted to ask before giving it a good whack. Thanks.

Thank you. I will try to turn it. However, the replacement pinion from Taig is just a straight shaft with a head on one end and the gear teeth on the other.... no threads. Presumably hardened material. I'll report back.

I guess they changed the design. You can always make a new hand wheel and press fit it in or thread it if there is enough material.
