Picked up this sander yesterday for $300. 1-1/2 HP 3450 rpm motor wired for 230 volts. Serial number puts it as being made in 1970.

I'm in the process of dis-assembly, cleaning and repairing. Only real problem I've found so far is the motor pulley wobbles and the insulation on the wiring is crumbling. I'll have to hunt down a cover for the top idler pulley, previous owner couldn't find it for me.

Nice score. Can you make the missing cover?

I'd certainly rather have that older unit instead of the newish "sanding center". I bought one of those for the toolmaker's shop. It was impossible to get decent vacuum suction to it. Also, that miter gauge groove that was vertical to the disc(for sanding circles) was very annoying.

Got around to replacing the motor pulley and rewiring it yesterday. Turned it on and the driven pulley had a lot of wobble too so I'm going to replace it plus the bearings while I have it apart. Might work on making the missing guards while I'm waiting on parts.

Nice score, you might be able to find a cover on old wood working machines or
OWWM or vintage machinery, they have a great site and forum. there is an area called boyd or bring out your dead that is where you place a wanted to buy or wanted to sell add, someone over there might have that guard you are looking for.
Good luck
Rick

Well after being interrupted by paying jobs I finally got back to goofing off and made the idler cover.

Nice work, Don. You could maybe even pass that pulley cover off as a factory one! Nice find by the way. I wouldn't mind finding one of those myself.
