This quote is from a long time back but I had a similar problem with my spin indexer. When I reversed the indexer so the working end was away from the indexing plate, I put a keyway in so the plate was locked to the shaft. There is still an issue with being able to get good grip in the collet with the short amount of leverage from the crank, but a bit of cheater bar helps that.
