I have a face mill that uses either round or octagonal inserts. When would I select one over the other? Is the octagonal considered a roughing insert?

That seems wrong. Are the pockets round or do they have corners?

It's made by LMT and it does take either according the the manufacturer.

Odd, yes I see that at MSC.

Yes, I would assume that the round ones give a smoother finish *iff* they don't chatter. They make a very wide cut, which generates a lot of force.

I would expect the octogonal ones to have better support, though.

Seems I just read somewhere that round are used for roughing. Mike
