Router Jig

Jim D
Here is the info on my BP Mill,
J head - Ser # J-22610
Knee Ser # 95594

Has a 1 HP- Fair Banks motor, 220 3PH
speeds are 80 to 2740 RPM's.

Has a tacked on Brass plate with USN 7 - 7 - 82 date on it,
that is just under where the V-ram pivots.

I think this a 82 yr model ?
I bought it in 1986 for $2200, with a vise and other tooling etc.
I had to go to Stockton, CA Navy yard to pick it up.

When I sent it out for it's check up/repair,
I want to change the motor to 1 ph,
to match all the other equipment,
and get rid of the other elect motor that is needed to run the mill.

Does the above info have any thing to do with the checkup/repair?

Another "Thank you" for that photo,
Do you have it set up so the router can pivot for true tracking?

I am looking for an alum housing router motor,
all I have found so far, the motor housings are plastic, :(
the OLD Sears model I have does not allow the motor to come off the base plate.

Any suggestions of router make/model, for this type of mounting?

Porter Cable. Not sure the model, I'd have to get to the shop to look. But it's an aluminum housing.

I use 2 hp Bosch routers, 3.5" housings, they seem to be the most popular for these types of applications.
The mount can pivot to put the cutter 90 degrees to the centerline of the stock when the stock is between centers on the duplicator. I rarely use this, only for 1 offs, as most of the time I only profile the stock on the duplicator, and then inlet on my cnc mill.
Matter of fact, I don't even use the router to profile the stock. I have it set up with a 4.5" angle grinder with a mill cutter and a roller follower, just like a copy lathe. The stock spindles are powered with a dc gear reduction motor and the carriage is driven with a power feed from a mill, so I can leave it unattended and it will stop when it hits the limit switch.dup1.jpg

Thanks,
You would have to show me that stuff, quite a machine,
drooling all over the key board, now.

On the first photo's you posted,
if you cut off that stock right in front of the comb,
it's the type of blank I am attempting to work on,
16-17" in total length, with a rear pistol grip,
for my SP Rem 700 SP pistol, 18" bbl length,
for the XP-100 type of blanks/actions.

No one makes these rear grips blanks any more,
as there is getting to be quite a large group of
shooters using them.

Don

I've done maybe 2 of them over the last 10 yrs or so for Savage Strikers, but the market was so small it wasn't worth making a pattern for. The ones I whittled were all done manually. If the demand comes back up, I think the easiest way to profile one would be start out as a rifle stock and just like you said......cut it off behind the pistol grip.

On your 4.5" angle grinder,
Did you make a special attachment for holding the mill cutter?

Tia,
Don

All that took was a bushing from 1.250" down to .875.
