Royal collet closer question

Greetings,

I have a royal collet closer that came with my Clausing 5914. I'm not understanding the spring loaded Collet adjustment lever lock. Through most of it's arc travel there is no spring force trying to seat the lever in the groove of the adjusting ring. The only time there is any spring action is at the extreme open and closed positions. At those positions it will try to stay open or stay closed while moving it.

It pretty much stays wherever I set it anywhere else in its arc. So there's no tension of the lever against the adjusting ring when in the groove and will slip.
There is no binding or rubbing on the side of the lever and the spring and plunger are in place, I'm stumped.

I have the same setup on my 5914. From your pictures the closer is not on the lathe. When it is mounted that key indexes into the Collet Adjusting Nut. My understanding is that it keeps the collet at a consistent size for repetitive work.

Yes it's currently off the lathe. I'm doing a ground up cleaning so the lathe is in about 65 pieces right now. I know that lever sits in the groove on the index ring when mounted on the lathe, however at the point of contact there is absolutely zero spring pressure from that lever into the groove of the index ring to hold it down in place it can very easily creep up out of the groove with a slight centrifugal force while it is spinning. So my question is on yours is there constant spring pressure trying to close the lever throughout the entire travel? This is my first Royal closer with this style lever. I have had JFK closers in the past on my Logan lathes and those pins are spring-loaded at any position

Just went to the shop and checked on mine. It definitely snaps into place in both positions. I've never had it come unlocked in use. Do you have the instructions and parts list for the closer? If not , I can probably figure out how to scan it for you .

Unfortunately I have no paperwork on the closer, Only the lathe. A scan would be great. Thanks
I think something is wrong with the shape of the lever cam that the spring plunger pushes up against. It makes no sense that when the lever is flush with the outer ring it just stays there, It should want to move towards the index ring. At least that's what logic suggests,

Here's what I have for the closer, hope it helps. Can't really tell from the drawing but I wonder if the tail end of the lever might have a bit more mass which would help to keep it in position under CF loads.

Thanks for the docs. I have a Royal collet closer on my Logan 6550. I initially though it was broken, like the OP, because I couldn't get the lever to stay in place - then I backed it out a bit, spun the lever 180 degrees, and it has worked fine ever since. So your thoughts on the lever tail end make sense.
