Has anyone made their own barrel nut wrench ? I've looked at them and the only I figure it's possible is with a CNC machine ?
They run about forty bucks but my head tells me buying a hundred dollars in tools to make one is better

Its always better to buy more tooling! no matter what the reason.

What type of barrel nut are you referring to? A shootin' iron type of barrel or a 55 gallon type of barrel?

Chuck the grumpy old guy

The small shank savage with the notches. The smooth nut style is easy to make with a tension nut.
Here's a Google picture of it.

That looks like a broach job. Might do it on a shaper. I'll have to look at my Savage . I hadn't thought or a barrel change yet.

I've been making them for 15 years.......the one in the picture is actually a knock off of the ones I make. Mine are laser cut.

I don't have a laser cutter either this may be something I need to buy.
I was figuring that I could spin it on a rotary table and use a small end mill to cut the teeth ?

There are many ways to make it, all taking time and ingenuity, to accomplish such a simple task as breaking a nut loose. I would advise you to just buy the wrench, and spend all your time and ingenuity on loading ammo.

the new savage rifles have a smooth barrel nut. really looks nice but a lot harder to remove. I bought the correct tool from midway.. ok it was supposed to work but isn't worth 2 cents. the bolt used to tighten broke before I got it tight enough so it wouldn't slip. I haven't made a tool that will work yet but it Is on the list of things to do. Savage is making some of the most accurate rifle on the market. griz
