i haven't had a lot of experience with 302, but it machines a lot like 304 from my limited experience.
chromium and nickle are tough nuts to crack, that's why it doesn't machine friendly

Thanks. I don't feel quite as bad now knowing that it's difficult to work with. Today I received a bag of drops from the fabrication shop I retired from. Mostly aluminum and some mild steel, 3/4 to 1 inch diameters. There's plenty to practice with.

Parting tool has to be dead nuts on center to hair low, lowish rpm, and feed fast.

I prefer a razor sharp thicker HSS parting blade. IIRC, 3/16 momax blade on my 12x36

I kiss the part quickly to test the set up, retract, get my oil brush, lube up, and plunge back in.
