Mornin

I built a 2X72 belt grinder 4 yrs ago. I used a piece of .500 all thread for the wheel shaft. Plan was to make a proper shaft later on.

Question is. Should I look for a specific grade of steel for the shaft?
I have some mystery grade 1" round in stock...but thought that I should ask here first

The shaft will spin a 10 " wire wheel and a 8" grizzly aluminum/rubber coated wheel at about 3k RPM

Tks Gents

All thread is typically made out of low grade steel. If it worked all these years. I would think any grade steel would work again. But if you want my 3 cents, I would probably choose 1144. Good Luck…Dave

Thank You. You reminded me, I have a piece 3/4”-16, B7 hardened all-thread, being used as part of a jackshaft on an Atlas lathe, I need to replace.

4140 prehard could be a good choice also.
