I made a few back when all I had was a shaper and a mini lathe.
The big one is 15 inches long and mounts in the clapper. Smaller ones go in the tool holder(made on the shaper)for a lantern style holder.
I just recently made one for my shaper. I haven't actually used it yet to cut a keyway but did do a test cut on a piece of scrap steel plate. Seems to work. Here's a couple of pics:
Nice job on the V-block Greg. I'm sure that is a go to fixture for the shaper. A lot of talented inventive folks here, always fun to see all the different solutions. Mike
Some nostalgia for your viewing....seems like a long time ago..
Of note: the tool I was using to cut the BXA dovetail is 3/8 x 1 inch x 6 inch long. Someone on this forum helped me figure out that that would be rigid. (it's HSS) I wasn't about to figure that out by myself back then.
