That number also happens to be the serial number of my 1942 byf luger.

Byf was a manufacturing code. It just means that it was made by Mauser.
 
OK, good to know; both of mine are DWM, one is a 1920 commercial, the other 1914.
 
And I am sure that they were machined with the best, sharpest, German end mills available!
(So, not a total hijack, right?)
 
You shouldn't use a Diamond wheel for steel, you should have a CBN wheel for steel Diamond wheels are for carbide....
