Does anyone know where a person could get a threaded blank about 3 to 4 inch in diam, prefer Alum
have a couple of projects, Like making a custom holder and a custom cutter, but want to start with a blank made to fit on a Sherline spindle. Have seen some used for various stuff on YouTube but do not know where to find them. Did find End Mill blanks by A2Z but nothing bigger.
here is one of the projects I want to do.

I ended up purchasing a 3/4x16 tap and die at a local Ace hardware, about $30 for the pair. Dead useful when I want to make an arbor or special tool. Just keep in mind that either one takes a bit of "oomph" to turn when threading. Use plenty of Tap magic.

[SUB]I have a better idea.
Do you have a 3 jaw chuck that fits on the mill? If so, use it as the tool holder. Drill a hole obliquely in a piece of 3/4" rod and put a 1/4" lathe tool through it. Hold it in place with a set screw and you have a fly cutter. Works great!

Is that what you meant?

As far as I know, nobody makes these for a Sherline spindle. They are simple to make but you'll need a bigger lathe to do it with. If you make a drawing of the plate, complete with spindle register recess, I don't think a shop would charge you too much to make a few up. At least you can get on with your projects.

I made this flycutter on my Taig lathe with the milling attachment and some creative clamping. turned out pretty good and was the first "real" project I made with the lathe. I used one of the Taig blank arbors I picked up from Nick over at http://www.cartertools.com/. Already threaded 3/4-16 so that hassle is out of the way. Catalog # 1132

Never mind the drawing, it's for my next project. :shush:

If making a fly cutter is what you want, here is the one I made on a Sherline Mill. I used 10 deg. on slot and works great. I used a Sherline lathe for the 3/8 dia. to fit the mill holder.

Would a faceplate work for you (it does have some predilled holes)? Chuck adapters could also be used but they are usually cast iron & have pre drilled holes also. Not sure if these have a register though or one that matches (I'm assuming the Sherline has one)

As said, they'd be pretty easy to make with a bigger lathe. I'm sure there are plenty of guys here who could make you some if you ask.

Thanks rwm, those blank arbors are real handy. I have also made a saw arbor that will hold 1 or up to 4 saw blades for cutting different width slits/slots and I have one more blank on hand and I'm trying to decide just what to do with it. Maybe a mini boring head?

At less than $3.00 a pop and already threaded and dimensioned for the spindle, they are mighty handy.

Absolutely! I just bought 10 of them, arceady made a flycutter and a drillbit holder. Needed the clearance a chuck couldn't provide to drill a part for a neighbor. Those arbors are great, and I couldn't make them that cheap. Really repeatable too.
