Shorten an NPT tap?

Agreed if you have a tapered reamer by means use it, but I'd never buy one
Yeah provably not worth buying one it unless you have a lot of holes to tap or have to meet specifications. I was lucky and got a set of them along with an auction lot I bought years ago.

I did end up grinding 3 threads off of my tap and all is well - it let me limit the bore depth to 1/2" deep while still getting to a proper major thread diameter. I also figured out the same thing that RJ suggested: keep 2 taps on hand: one modified and one OEM length.

I haven't tried them yet, but I did order an interrupted thread tap to give that a try. It has nothing to do with solving my problem, but I hear they tap easier.

What you are looking for is a "short projection tap". McMaster has them. It's what you need for tapping the branch of a tee.

Thanks so much; had no idea such thing existed.
