Looking for a 4 jaw for my 12" Atlas (which is still in rebuild status). Considering this old skinner. Will need to make base plate for it. Anybody had any experience with these? This is a 6" chuck. I like that it has reversible jaws.

I have 2 cushmans, 6" 4 jaw which are similar. They are very nice 4 jaw chucks for a good price( less than 100 each). One I put a shars d1-4 backplate on and the other is on my rotary table. If the screws are good and there is no damage to body of chuck it should work well.

That is a combination chuck, works both like a 3 jaw (with four jaws) and an independent 4 jaw; there is a knob on the backside that disengages the crown gear that meshes with the pinions on the individual screw gears. I have big doubts that you would be happy with it; think of it as the Shopsmith of chucks.

I have a Skinner 10" independent 4 jaw chuck for my Sheldon lathe and have been very happy with it's performance. I've never used the style shown in your pictures. I have well over a dozen different chucks for the lathes in my shop. All the older 4 jaw styles use reversible jaws. The newer ones use American Standard jaws where the bases remain with the chuck and the tops are reversed.

Personally I prefer the newer ones with the American Standard jaws. The tops can easily be replaced (although hard jaws can be expensive)., and can easily accommodate soft jaws. I have several different size sets of soft jaws I use on a regular basis. Most sets of soft jaws can be purchased for under $50.00

That helps greatly. I own a Shopsmith and that's not the way I want to go with a 4 jaw chuck.
