Some interesting engraving on a penny.

I've been looking for sources of 1/8" carbide that won't break the bank =QUOTE]

Have you looked at solid carbide PCB drills? New surplus are sometimes available on auction sites. You may be able to find an industrial user with dull ones to dispose of. They have a long shank, about 3mm diameter, I've made D bits from the shanks to drill out broken taps.

Not even close with any kind of CNC machine. The detail done in this type of engraving is an artform and not duplicatable with a machine. I will post a link below to some hand engraving done on a firearm by one of the top engravers in the world. His fees to do this type of work are well into 5 figures depending on what the customer's desires are. In the end the value of the gun more than doubles with his work on it and I am sure he turns down more work than he is able to take. I am certain the companies making the guns have CNC machines on which parts are made; if they were able to program them to do this work it would be done. This is really art in metal with each piece being a one of a kind work.
