Something For Barrel Work

Ball bearing center for your tail stock?

I'll guess a swivel rest/turret for some heavy iron.

All kidding aside, (yeah, right ) - A steady rest?

Ozzie46 is correct, spider for the headstock, outboard side. Hope I'm right, do I win the car and cruise to Hawaii?

Spider would not require internal bearings, and the bore size of the bearings shows that it is a ball bearing center. The picture also shows that it is mounted into a tapered sleeve by the looks of things. The faceplate may be some misdirection!

But I have been wrong many times!

Faceplate is a red herring. Object being bored for bearings is mounted in spindle taper.

That's what I thought but I was thrown off by the bearings. What're they for?

John

The bearing sits inside the spyder and allows the barrel to rotate freely with total support. Much smother than just snugging up the barrel on brass pads. I still want that car and trip for the correct answer.
