South Bend Metal Toolroom Lathe. - $2,200 (Pasadena, CA)

What defines a “tool room lathe”? Inquiring noobs wanna know.

So they can tack on another Grand to the price? Lathes that old aren’t any better than a regular hobby lathe. If that! that lathe is not worth 2k.

Tool room implies that it's of superior accuracy over and above "regular" machines. This is most definitely the latter.

South Bend sold two classes of lathe; an engine lathe and a tool room lathe. The tool room lathe was much higher precision and came with more accessories.... **When NEW**. Precision after 70 years is up to the condition. These both have the integrated chip pan, which is one of the toolroom additions, so they are likely correct in calling them tool room models. The first is an early 16" single tumbler, the second is a post war dual tumbler 13"
