Many years ago at an estate sale we picked up a Starret 98 for 5 bucks but vial gone.

Later got another for 30 that was fine other than the yellowed tint to the vial but all good.

About 6 months ago someone posted here about good vials on ali so we looked and found some for about 5 bucks or so.

Their description was not real clear so we guessed at one and the other was something like 20 '' / 2mm, did not sound right having inch and metric unless it meant something else, for 5 bucks why not.

Took forever to arrive and not real big so they fit in the chamber with a lot of room.

A bit of tape over the top and fill the chamber with latex silicon we had handy.

Pushed the vial to settle against the bottom.

After a week we tried it out.

The 98 as advertised is 0.005 per for.

The replacement is 0.0025 per division.

Not the best look but function more important.

I think the calcs on the accuracy of the vial are not right.

No calculations, just placed on the lathe then slid feeler gauge under one end until bubble moved one line.

Starret took 0.005 and other moved a bit more than one line with 0.003

Granted lines further apart on the Starret but for my use it is fine.

Depends what you want to do with it; not sensitive enough for lathe leveling.
