Stuck Chuck

I have a Clausing lathe that came with a 3 jaw chuck on it. I tried to remove per instructions (using back gear) and no joy. Through my research, that is a bad way of doing it. I’ve since tried strap wrenches, impact driver, 3’ cheater bar to no avail.
then I began to wonder, is there something I need to remove first? I see three Allen screws on the face of the chuck, do those need to be removed before trying to unscrew the chuck?

Those screws remove the front plate exposing the scroll. If you remove them, center punch the front plate so you can reassemble in the exact orientation. Once the scroll is exposed a little penetrating oil may help in the chuck removal

Yep. you'll probably have to bang the cover off with a soft face hammer

Screws removed, allowed chuck to come off. Then I’m bolted that back plate. Now left with the screw on plate still in the spindle. Need to get it off to screw on the 4 jaw

Make sure you are turning the backing plate in the correct direction. Facing the plate, it's counterclockwise for most all lathes to loosen.

You would need to check if it is ok to do, but a bit of heat might help now.

When you get it off, look the mating surfaces over closely to see what was binding it up, and then repair any problems found. If the threads bottom out before the registering surfaces make contact with each other, you might want to put a shop made and accurately flat shim washer between the registers before you assemble it. Make sure the threads are oiled before assembly. If something made the chuck slam to a stop at some point while under power, that might have caused the problem...
