We were assembling a sheet metal shelving unit that has rivnuts with some not well lined up.

The holes were close but the screws would not start.

Remembered a trick we learned on another project and thought we would share.

Where holes are close but not perfect and it is not optimum to drill you get a taper tap of the bolt that goes into the drilled hole.

Our case the rivnuts were on our side and the bolts came in from the back and could not drill without total teardown.

The tap threaded into the nut and the smaller diameter of the starting end of the tap cut away the material that was upsetting starting of the bolts.

Great care to avoid breaking the tap but it works great.
