Tectyl 900 gun oil for cutting fluid?

I had a brother in law that was the crew chief of ordinance on the USS Independence. He was very familiar with this stuff. They used it on all heavy artillery and smaller deck guns, mostly for rust protection. He also said that weapons that weren't used regularly, had to be stripped and re-coated because of the gummy condition from prolonged storage. He called it a modern day "cosmoline".
