[Newbie] Thoughts On This Mill

I think you did quite well! That's sure a nice looking machine. I never thought about using a wrecker, great idea. I've looked at few where the people didn't have to load it and while showing up with a cherry picker I'm sure I could make it work, but safely and quickly surely wouldn't be words to describe that process.

Any idea what the differences are with the 847 vs the 837? Just from pictures looks like the table might be a tad smaller on the 837, and your head look different than the 847 pictures.

Thank you very much for responding.

I'm not really sure of the differences maybe some of the pro's might know . It has the harden chrome ways 3 HP motor tons of travel and adjustment.
I move my Bridgeport copy with a cherry picker but this mill would bend it.

Edit to add some craigslist posts around here that I looked at. Machine values seem higher around here than else where?

Thanks for the links. I don't think those prices are too far off, there is a load of extras on those machines.

I just don't have that much fun money saved up, so I'm focusing on a solid basic machine.

I wonder if they have turcite the ways that are hardened. My acer has hardened Y axis ways on the knee with turcite on the saddle, there is no turcite anywhere else, I think newer ones have turcite also on the table ways of the saddle.

Well still looking. The people that owned this mill were beyond shady so I gave up on it. I found a WI 860c for a very reasonable price and 4 hours closer. Lucky for me the seller was honest and told me the head needed rebuilt, and the table had a ton of play.

There must be a nice lightly used Wells Index 847 or 860 out there somewhere.

I bite the bullet & bought an Enco back on the Cyber Monday deal.

It was about $6K to the door. I couldn't pass it up. I have yet to cut a piece on it yet but looks very well made. It comes pretty basic. There is no tooling to speak of. It has a draw bar one double ended closed wrench, small alien wrench set, & pretty nice small metal tool box. Not sure why they scratched the paint off the top tho. It had a sticker there but they scratched the paint off also.

You can see it here: http://www.hobby-machinist.com/threads/enco-10x54.40863/

Nice mill better than a beat up machine
