A while ago I ordered up some mokume and the supplier gave me a bonus piece that was the end piece of the mokume during forging. It wasn't constructed with a uniform pattern all around. The mokume 'grain' only showed on one side. Nevertheless I used it to make a torch. I started on the head (ti) then the body (mokume) then the tail (ti). Then later bead blasted the ti

I practiced on a bit of aluminium before shaping the body

Next to some mokume bar of the same delivery. I think the different colour is an optical illusion.

I couldn't wait for a natural patina so i wrapped the mokume in rubber bands for a day

My brother owns a bead blaster and i got him to blast the head and tail

Great job. :encourage: I'm a big fan of the look of bead blasted or stonewashed Ti but I also love the look of bare machined Ti.

Really nice job. Both mechanically and aesthetically.

I do have to start checking the location of the posters though. At first I kept expecting you to show a flame coming from the Torch.

Usually with Mokume and Damascus you would finish the part with a wipe down of iron(III) chloride (it's called vitriol for a reason). This brings out the pattern strongly. Mokume can be made of any metal, so you need to know what you're working with to predict the outcome, but if it has an iron component it will do it's thing well.

I had never heard of Mokume-gane. I had to look it up. Pretty when it comes out.

I also like the way ti cuts. I can't work it as fast as aluminium but if my setup is right and the cutting bit is sharp then it's nice to work with. If something isn't right with the setup or cutting bit then it quickly becomes apparent as it just won't cut.

I didn't ask the supplier of the exact alloys used but i suspect it was copper and cupronickel.
