Titanium Stash Cans

Just finished a few more Ti ones. These will be gifts for friends. The 2 money stash cans still need to be anodized.

WIP pics. I never used to take very many pics back when I used to make these a lot.

Oh man Dark! I do wanna do this, even have some Ti ready to go, ice just heard so many warnings about cutting it. Never mind the unquenchable fire from hell....speeds/feeds/coolant...I just hear such conflicting answers on this. Give me a short sweet brother! I’m dying those are so hot!

Thanks GoN. Ah, just have at it. Once you play with enough you'll figure what works for you & what doesn't. When I first machined any Ti Gr5 people told me my old 8x14 mini lathe wouldn't be able to do it. They were wrong. I mean I wasn't able to knurl it on that lathe & I burnt up many drill bits but eventually I figured out what worked for me as people never gave me any pointers, just told me it wouldn't work.

I'm no pro but I know what has been working for me. I actually use aluminum specific inserts, like CCGT, DCGT, SCGT, CNGG. The non high positive variants work too but I find they create more heat in the part & they burn up quicker. I do have some Sandvik H13A grade inserts that are for Ti & while they do work well the alumn specific inserts give me great results & are much cheaper. They don't break chips well for Ti though so watch out for them stringers when doing light finishing cuts.

Honestly I don't go by recommended speeds often. I'm just a hobbyist so there's no boss breathing down my neck waiting for parts to be done. I just go by feel, sight, & sound. But it looks like I stay in the 120-200 SFM range. Up to 300s for finishing sometimes if I'm taking a very light finishing cut. For parting or grooving I drop down to about 50 SFM. I find power feeding works better for me. I do feed by hand when roughing sometimes but if you feed inconsistently when making a deep cut there's more chance at breaking an insert nose. I don't run flood coolant in my home shop. I just apply coolant manually with a spray bottle or luer lock bottle, mainly when drilling. I also use Boelube 90 on Ti. Tapping I use ITW Safe Tap Paste, it's like a gel.

Again I don't claim to know what I'm doing but this is what works for me. :big grin:

Very Very Nice Darkzero. Do you do the anodizing yourself or send it out?

Thank you. Yes I do the anodizing myself. (Except the 2 in the 1st post that has a 2 color brush pattern, those were done by someone else)

Anodized. One girl wanted a Louis Vuitton ish color, the other wanted pink. I was aiming for light pink but it came out more on the magenta side. This color is more vibrant than light pink anyway.
