Hi,

I recently got a VN #12 with a 2hp 3 phase motor intended to be run off a rotary phase converter.

I'm looking at carbide insert face mills but I'm not sure how big I can go on a such a small machine.

I've used a 4" APMT face mill on a Trak K3 knee mill without problems.

I assume the limitation here is rigidity of the machine, not motor HP.

I attached a picture of what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

As just a want-a-be, I see no issues with running whatever size face mill you believe will fit. Now learning the feed & speed of that milling tool on your particular machine should require caution. Just start slow & easy & test the limits of depth of cut vs quality of cut same as dipping your toe in the ocean for starters. Soon, you will be taking as much advantage from the cutter as the machine is capable of. There are charts & there is math to guide you. Don't be afraid to try the scientific approach.

I have a 2" 45 degree and a 3" 90 degree, and both work fine. I would probably stay with 3" and under. It will probably run a 4", but I wouldn't.
